David Livingstone and the lion, 1844. On 16th February 1844, Mebalwe and missionary David Livingstone (1813-1873), joined Mabotsa villagers in defending their sheep from lions. Livingstone got a clear shot at a large lion, but while he was re-loading it attacked, crushing his left arm, and forced him to the ground. His life was saved by Mebalwe diverting its attention by trying to shoot the lion. He too got bitten. A man who tried spearing it was attacked just before it dropped dead. Salmon-poaching on the Tweed: "Burning the Water", 1862. Illegal fishing in Scotland. Night poaching from boats, using leisters - a type of spear - was called "burning the water". Metal baskets on the boats were filled with fragments of tar barrel and rags steeped in pitch and were set alight, and the bright blaze attracted the fish to the surface of the water.
