SALVAGING HISTORY - The next town on the Supreme Command's list was Xanton, which was famous for its cathedral now very badly damaged. It was known that many fine Libraries of manuscripts and archives were situated in the town and, although still under shell fire, Sqd-Ldr Dixon-Spain and his driver, Pte John Burtoft of 10 Woodlands Drive, Flixton, Manchester (a steel turner before the war), have done some very fine work in salvaging these books from the libraries which for the most part have suffered from bomb damage.
