An old engraving showing a ‘cipher machine’ (a type of Arithmometer) in the latter half of the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. An Arithmometer (or Arithmomètre) was the first digital mechanical calculator. This version worked using revolving disks. This way of calculating found use in devices on machinery such as gasometers, steam gauges and counters on printing presses. Cipher comes from the Arabic ‘sifr’, which means ‘nothing’ or ‘zero’. The word came to Europe along with the Arabic numeral system.
