Scottish battle blue white Standard Flag at the Battle of Nantwich was fought during the First English Civil War, between the Parliamentarians and Royalists, northwest of the town of Nantwich in Cheshire on 25 January 1644. The Royalists under Lord Byron were besieging Nantwich, and Sir Thomas Fairfax led an army to relieve the town. As Fairfax approached, a sudden thaw caused the River Weaver to rise in spate, dividing Byron's cavalry from his infantry and artillery, who were overrun and destroyed by Fairfax. An old engraving of the medieval English warships of the 1300s. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. These were moved by sails, oars, or a combination of the two. ‘Cogs’ were single-masted vessels, with clinker-built sides and a flush-planked, flat bottom. Cogs replaced Viking-type ships in Northern waters during the 13th century. Their high sides made them more difficult to board in a sea-fight. Cogs were also used as military transports and warships, fitted with towers fore and aft. The period would also see a shift from the steering oar (side rudder) to the stern rudder.
