The Bishop of Paris pronouncing the Benediction for the relic of the True Cross at a market fair in Saint Denis in June, following the festival of Saint Barnabas. The Latin world 'feria' meaning holy day was the origin of the word 'fair.' Each feria was a day when large numbers of people would assemble for worship. The commerce and trade of the Medieval fairs meant money. The church took an active part in sponsoring fairs on feast days, and as a result, fairs came to be an important source of revenue for the church. A court fool, an itinerant performer who entertained common folk at fairs and markets. Jesters in medieval times are often thought to have worn brightly coloured clothes and eccentric hats in a motley pattern. Jesters entertained with a wide variety of skills: principal among them were song, music, and storytelling, but many also employed acrobatics, juggling, telling jokes, and magic tricks. Malmesbury Market Cross aka 'the Birdcage', is a late 15th century structure in the town of Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England. Standing in the centre of the town, it was built c.1490, possibly using limestone salvaged from the recently ruined part of Malmesbury Abbey. An elaborately carved octagonal structure of the Perpendicular Period, it's recognised as one of the best preserved of its kind in England. A carving of the Crucifixion and figures of saints survived the Reformation on the open lantern. The building still serves to shelter market traders by day and as a meeting point at night. Percy's Reliques is a folio of ballads and popular songs collected by Bishop Thomas Percy and published in 1765. Some of them were found on the floor in the house of his friend Humphrey Pitt of Shifnal, a small market town of Shropshire, where Pitt's maid had been using the leaves to light fires. Other sources were the Pepys Library of broadside ballads collected by Samuel Pepys. They all serve to illustrate 16th Century domestic life during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. This one illustrates a young gallant newly come to his laud, Who keeps a brace of painted madams at his command.
