Medieval robber barons or knights attacking a Merchant Caravan during the 12th Century. They often imposed high or unauthorized tolls on rivers or roads passing through their territory. Some robbed merchants, land travelers, and river traffic—seizing money, cargoes, entire ships, or engaged in kidnapping for ransom. Right of the bishopric of Tournai on beer. Originally this tax was paid in kind. The Chapter collector went to the brewers' house to collect it. Later it was agreed that the brewers themselves would transport to the Chapter the amount due to be paid to them in kind. The Pont Neuf and small customs house at Auray, a town on the River Loch in Southern Brittany, France. The bridge links Auray’s upper town on the River Loch’s north-west bank to Auray’s port area of Saint-Goustan on the south-east bank. Auray has long been a trading centre and the customs house collected taxes on items passing through the port and over the bridge. A stone bridge was first recorded here in the 1200s, but the river in this area is strongly affected by tides and the bridge has been rebuilt twice, in 1464 and 1752. A quarrel broke out between King Edward I and Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, and Marshal of England following the King's extensive military campaigns that required high levels of taxation. Edward met with both lay and ecclesiastical opposition. At the Salisbury parliament of February 1297, Bigod objected to a royal summons of military service argueing that the military obligation only extended to service alongside the King. The King swore that Norfolk must go to Flanders or hang. Norfolk responded that neither would happen and 1500 knights sided with him putting the monarchy in danger. Abraham of Bristol, aka the Jew of Bristol, who refused to pay his quota of 10,000 marks, had, by order of the king, seven of his teeth extracted, one a day, until he was willing to pay. King John, having become indebted to the Jewish community while in Ireland, at first treated Jews with a show of forbearance. But with the loss of Normandy in 1205 a new spirit seems to have come over the attitude of John to the Jews and he demanded the sum of no less than £100,000 from the religious houses of England, and 66,000 marks from the Jews (1210).
