An old engraving of a how a mine safety cage in the 1800s worked. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The mine safety cage was developed by Pierre-Joseph Fontaine (1810-1877) in 1849. This cage contains tubs of the mined coal being lifted up the shaft to the surface. The rope cables lifting the cage to the surface has snapped. This released a spring on the top of the cage, which has thrust levers towards the wooden beams on either side. The weight of the cage has driven the ends of the levers into the wood, leaving the safety cage suspended and held in place. An 1850's wash drawing of a Bilston colliery (UK) miner in his work clothes. There were a number of collieries in the district after the Industrial Revolution, prior to which it was a largely rural area dependent on farming. By 1900, numerous factories and coalmines could be found along with houses especially built for the workers. The Bilston coal mines were supposedly haunted by an evil spirit, and a local exorcist known as The White Rabbit was called in to rid the mines of the spirit. An old engraving of men operating winding gear at a mine being powered by a steam locomotive in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. This illustration is unusual as most winding engines were stationary ones. A tub is lifted from a mine shaft and a coal pile is seen right. Winding gear was used to control a cable or rope, usually to power a mining hoist at a pit head. Early winding engines were hand or horse powered. The demand for winding engines was one reason that led James Watt to develop his rotative beam engine, which turned a winding drum, could stop often and reverse. An old engraving of a John Smeaton Cornish boiler used in mining in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The simplest form of flued boiler was Richard Trevithick's ‘high-pressure’ Cornish boiler. This is a long horizontal cylinder with a single large flue containing the fire. Cornish boilers had curved surfaces, better to resist the pressure and less likelihood of local overheating. John Smeaton (1724 –1792) was an English civil engineer. An old engraving of steam locomotive designed for use in mines. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This American engine, Baldwin’s direct acting locomotive, worked on a gauge of 2 feet 6 ins and burnt coke or anthracite for fuel. A mine railway (or mine railroad or pit railway), is a railway constructed to carry materials and workers in and out of a mine. At first on of wood rails, but eventually adding protective iron, waggons were hauled by men (and children) or horse and donkey. Sometimes steam locomotion by fixed engines outside the mine. An old engraving of a worker at an English winding engine. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This type of small Cornish steam-engine was connected to equipment that used a double drum and wire ropes to haul up coal or ore from the mine – one drum could raise while the other lower. Another shaft on the engine (right) could be used to pump out water from underground.
