The Mint 1809 Designed and etched by Thomas Rowlandson In the late 13th century the Royal Mint moved into the Tower of London and from this home produced most of Britain's coinage. Pugin and Rowlandson here show workers feeding metal blanks into presses that hold dies able to stamp beyween sixty and eighty coins a minute. In 1810, shortly after this print was made, a new Mint, equiped with steam-powered machinery, opened on Little Tower Hill just outside the fortress's walls.. The Mint. Microcosm of London, pl. 55. Doorway to the principal floor of Bennets Hall, which dates back to the mid 13th century and is sometimes known as 'The Old Mint', since it is believed to have been the site of Charles I's Shrewsbury Mint, during the Civil War. It has more recently been established that this was the town house of the Ludlow family, probably built by Nicholas, father of the builder of Stokesay Castle. The archway beside the steps led to Leopard Shut, later known as Purslow's Passage, after a tailor at No 3 Pride Hill. Once one of the most-photographed scenes in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. It was erected in 1811, from designs by Smirke and Johnson, and greatly extended in 1881-82. It was formerly the only place of issue for gold coinage having currency in the United Kingdom and its colonies, but there are now mints at Melbourne and Sydney, and at Calcutta and Bombay. The automatic machinery used for converting bar gold into coins of exactly the same size and weight is most ingenious, and the different processes of coining are extremely interesting.
