Flight lead F-106 goes belly up in the “break” from the rest of the four ship formation. This was probably the last four ship formation for the Montana ANG as the “Six” were transferred out during conversion to the F-16. FAA regulations limiting aircraft to 250 knots below 10,000 feet are waived for military fighters. Initial airspeed for an overhead pattern in the F-106 was 400 knots. On downwind after the break the aircraft was slowed to 250 knots and gear extended. Final turn was above 200 knots slowing to about 185 knots on final. Traffic patterns were completed rapidly. Montana ANG F-106A Delta Dart 57-0246 in the receiving area at AMARC in April 1987. The preservation process is pretty involved. Aircraft is safed, inspected, cleaned, purged, and sealed. A two coat vinyl sealant is sprayed on the canopy and heat sensitive areas to protect from the desert sun. This coating reduces internal temperature to within 15 degrees of air temperature. Once preserved the aircraft is towed to storage. Retired Convair F-106s started arriving at AMARC in the mid 1980s. Their numbers started dwindling in 1990 as the “Pacer Six” drone conversion program entered production. Two Montana ANG F-106A Delta Darts (AF# 57-0246 and 57-2490) delivered to AMARC in April 1987. Both joined rows of retired Convair F-106s at AMARC, Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ waiting for drone conversion. The pair were two of the approximately 200 F-106s converted to QF-106 in the “Pacer Six” drone program. The QF-106 were Full-Scale Aerial Target (FSAT) for weapons systems evaluation. During their target years from 1990 to 1998 they enabled evaluation of both air-to-air and surface-to-air missile systems. The last shoot down of a QF-106 was by a SAM at Hollomon AFB, NM in February 1997.
