On May 15th, 1925, Gu Zhenghong, a 20-year-old worker and CCP member of the No. 7 Cotton Factory, led five to six hundred workers to fight against the Japanese in Shanghai. He was shot and killed. This was the trigger for the outbreak of the May 30th Movement. The May 30th Movement was the first nationwide anti-japanese movement led by the Communist Party of China. Shanghai is an important stronghold for japanese colonial rule. Nippon Nekai Cotton Co., Ltd. opened a factory in Xiaoshadu, Shanghai. Due to constant abuse by the Japanese management, the workers went on strike in February of 1925.
