Following WWII, P & O began rebuilding their passenger fleet with the S S HIMALAY at Vickers Armstrong shipyard at Barrow-in-Furness. The 28,047 gross ton liner was at the time the largest passenger liner in the world. The vessel had an innovative Weir system evaporating plant for distilling fresh drinking water from sea water. Since 1948, Jakob Lauer has been making his own on the Nurburg-Ring and other tracks with his vintage DKW F 8 brand and his passion for car racing is still unbroken. At the age of 83, the Saarlander is considered Germany's oldest racing driver.
