Oil-Fuelled Passenger Locomotives -- The fireman checking the oil supply. Owing to the acute coal shortage and the continuing rise in the price of Loco Coal, the G.W.R. decided last Autumn to carry out experiments with Oil Burning Locomotives in conjunction with the Anglo-Tranman Oil Company. Experienced has shown that the performance of an Oil-fuelled Locomotive equals that of a similar coal burning locomotive in good running condition and that a heavy freight locomotive, under load, consumes 6 gallons of heavy fuel oil per mile as compared with 75 pounds of coal. GWR oil burners will save 50,000 tons of coal a year. The conversion by the Great Western Railway of 44 passenger and freight locomotives to oil burning well, it is estimated, cut the consumption of coal by 50,000 t yearly. This afternoon (Thursday) . The 'Garth Hall' a general utility class locomotive which has been converted to oil, was taken out from Paddington on a trial run to Old Oak Common. Locomotives burning oil, smokeless, and carry sufficient fuel for a run of 250 miles. The engine demonstrated this afternoon will shortly be used on the Paddington to Bristol express service. New Oil Burner. First two of the 20 oil burning Baldwin freight locomotives will be unloaded this week. Of 152 tons, they are similar to those built during the last war for service in Europe. They have an axle load of 16 tons, which will enable them to be used on tracks not up to mainline standard. They will be in the first tender engines with the Mikado (or 2-8-2) wheel arrangement to run on the NSW railways. August 18, 1952.
