A view of Port of Alexandria in the Nile Delta between the Mediterranean Sea and Mariut Lake in Alexandria, Egypt. Built in 1900 BCE, it is one of the oldest ports in the world, but over the centuries sand and silt deposits made the port unnavigable. It was cleared by forces under the command of Alexander the Great in 331 BC as part of the construction of Alexandria city to be the marine base for his fleet. Alexander's engineer Dinocrat linked the port of Alexandria and the island of Pharos with a bridge creating two harbour basins for commercial and military shipping. The Pharos of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and the most famous lighthouse in antiquity. Built by Sostratus of Cnidus, perhaps for Ptolemy I Soter, it was finished during the reign of Soter’s son Ptolemy II of Egypt in about 280 BCE. The lighthouse stood on the island of Pharos in the harbour of Alexandria and is said to have been more than 350 feet (110 metres) high, but sadly the lighthouse was severely damaged by three earthquakes between AD 956 and 1323 and became an abandoned ruin. The city of Alexandria on the Nile delta was founded around a small, ancient Egyptian town c. 332 BC by Alexander the Great during his conquest of the Achaemenid Empire. It became an important center of Hellenistic civilization and remained the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt and Roman and Byzantine Egypt for almost 1,000 years, until the Muslim conquest of Egypt in AD 641, when a new capital was founded at Fustat (later absorbed into Cairo). A late 19th Century illustration of the destruction of Roman temple in Alexandria, Egypt. Founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great, the city became the capital of Egypt, its major port, and then the major center of the widespread Hellenistic civilization. In 391 AD, Theophilus, the patriarch of Alexandria, was encouraged to oppress paganism in Alexandria by edicts calling for the strict enforcement of Christianity as an official religion of the empire; hence the destruction of the pagan temple. 19th Century view of of the Nile Delta formed in Northern Egypt (Lower Egypt) where the Nile River spreads out and drains into the Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the world's largest river deltas—from Alexandria in the west to Port Said in the east, on the Mediterranean coastline. The Delta begins slightly down-river from Cairo and is a rich agricultural region where people and intensively farmed for at least the last five thousand years. The Delta used to flood annually, but this ended with the construction of the Aswan Dam in the 1960s.
