Here Thames sailing barges are still being used, mainly for the grain trade, on the River Orwell and the North Sea. Centre is ‘Beric’, a 63-ton wooden barge built at Harwich, Essex in 1896. The waterfront area here is now almost exclusively devoted to residential, education development and leisure activities. The dock itself is the home moorings for leisure-craft of all shapes and sizes – a vintage 1960s photograph.

Centre is ‘Ena’, a wooden barge built at W B McLearon's yard in Harwich, Essex in 1906. She is a notable World War II Dunkirk ‘little ship’ reputed to have rescued 100 men in 1940. A major regeneration of the area has taken place since the 1990s and the port’s commercial activity is now located further downstream – a vintage 1960s photograph.
