Boscobel House is most famous for its role in the escape of Charles II after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. The building, in Shropshire was created around 1632, when landowner John Giffard of White Ladies Priory converted a timber-framed farmhouse into a hunting lodge. When Charles took refuge there, he was met by Colonel William Careless. He and the King spent all day hiding in a nearby oak tree (which became known as The Royal Oak), and later that night Charles hid in one of Boscobel’s priest holes. He eventually escaped the region disguised as the servant. Belvoir Castle in the English county of Leicestershire, overlooking the Vale of Belvoir. During the English Civil War, it was a notable stronghold of the king's supporters and King Charles I spent a night here on his way into Lincolnshire. In 1649 the castle was destroyed by Parliamentarians. A new building started in 1654 and completed by 1668 was designed as a large family home by the architect John Webb. Between 1799 and 1816 the castle was rebuilt in the romantic Gothic Revival style to designs by James Wyatt , but on 26 October 1816 it was almost destroyed by a fire, only to be rebuilt. The Banqueting House, Whitehall, is the grandest and best known survivor of the architectural genre of banqueting house and the only remaining component of the Palace of Whitehall. A pikeman of the 17th century in the dress of Cromwell's New Model Army. Depite the introduction of muskets, the pike played an important part in protecting musketeers from cavalry units. The pike is basically a very long thrusting spear formerly used extensively by infantry from the Late Middle Ages to the early 18th century, and were wielded by foot soldiers deployed in close quarters. They were eventually replaced by rifles, which had a longer range, and to which a bayonet could be attached. The galleried courtyard of the Blue Boar Tavern in Holborn, London cluttered with carriages, horses and luggage. Demolished in 1864 it was infamous as a stop off en route to the hangings at Tyburn. Hull Castle was an artillery fort in Kingston upon Hull in England. Together with two supporting blockhouses, it defended the eastern side of the River Hull, and was constructed by King Henry VIII to protect against attack from France as part of his Device programme in 1542.
