A late 19th Century illustration of the Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis), a flightless bird that became extinct in the mid-19th century. Breeding on rocky, isolated islands, early European explorers used the great auk as a convenient food source, and the bird's down was in high demand in Europe. Scientists realized that the great auk was disappearing and it became the beneficiary of many early environmental laws, but this proved ineffectual. The last two confirmed specimens were killed on Eldey, off the coast of Iceland, On 3 June 1844. Sunset Sky. Artist: John Frederick Kensett (American, Cheshire, Connecticut 1816-1872 New York). Dimensions: 20 x 32 in. (50.8 x 81.3 cm). Date: 1872. Classical Military Subject. Artist: William Hamilton (British, London 1751-1801 London). Dimensions: Sheet: 10 1/8 × 7 5/8 in. (25.7 × 19.3 cm). Date: 1770-80. Hamilton belonged to a generation determined to expand the scope of the arts in Britain. He traveled to Rome as a teenager to study with Antonio Zucchi, returned to England to make decorative paintings for Robert Adam, then entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1769. A Soldier. Artist: William Hamilton (British, London 1751-1801 London). Dimensions: Sheet: 9 3/4 × 7 3/8 in. (24.7 × 18.8 cm). Crested macaques foraging on a trail in forest. Foraging is one of the five classes of crested macaque activity identified by Timothy O'Brien and Margaret Kinnaird in a research paper first published in International Journal of Primatology in January 1997. Burying beetles or sexton beetles (genus Nicrophorus) are the best-known members of the family Silphidae (carrion beetles). Most of these beetles are black with red markings on the elytra (forewings). Burying beetles are true to their name—they bury the carcasses of small vertebrates such as birds and rodents, like the dead rat in the illustration, as a food source for their larvae. They are unusual among insects in that both the male and female parents take care of the brood. . English: Elephants pushing cannons drawn by bullocks, Kota, mid-18th century [Elephants pushing cannons drawn by bullocks, Kota, mid-18th century] This powerful fragmentary drawing of artillery on the move may have been a study for wall-paintings showing an army on the march. The large carriage-mounted cannons are drawn by bullock teams and pushed from behind by the royal elephants. Master gunners, mainly European mercenaries, sit on each cannon giving directions. Elephants were widely used for extreme lifting and pushing, and heaving the artillery along was all in their day’s work. This small panel is one of approximately fifty oil sketches and drawings made as preparatory studies for Seurat's monumental masterpiece, A Sunday on La Grand Jatte. Painted from 1884-86, the scene depicts Parisians at leisure on an island in the Seine. Crested macaques roaming and foraging on tree. Foraging is one of the five classes of crested macaque activity identified by Timothy O'Brien and Margaret Kinnaird in a research paper first published in International Journal of Primatology in January 1997. When foraging, crested macaques are 'moving slowly with attention directed toward a potential food source or manipulating substrates in search of potential foods,' the report says. 'Macaques spent more than 60% of the day on the ground; resting and long-distance movements were usually on the ground rather than in trees, the researchers added. A Warrior on Horseback second quarter 15th century The Veneto This study for a warrior on horseback has formerly been attributed to the Venetian artist, Michele Giambono, due to the general resemblance of the subject to the master’s fresco of the equestrian figure of San Crisogono (San Trovaso, Venice). However, given the differences of pose and style, the relationship is too generic to ascribe the two works to the same hand. It appears instead that both Giambono’s painted equestrian figure and this study were independently modeled on the same source: the ancient bronze horses of the Basilica Stock Photohttps://www.alamy.com/image-license-details/?v=1https://www.alamy.com/a-warrior-on-horseback-second-quarter-15th-century-the-veneto-this-study-for-a-warrior-on-horseback-has-formerly-been-attributed-to-the-venetian-artist-michele-giambono-due-to-the-general-resemblance-of-the-subject-to-the-masters-fresco-of-the-equestrian-figure-of-san-crisogono-san-trovaso-venice-however-given-the-differences-of-pose-and-style-the-relationship-is-too-generic-to-ascribe-the-two-works-to-the-same-hand-it-appears-instead-that-both-giambonos-painted-equestrian-figure-and-this-study-were-independently-modeled-on-the-same-source-the-ancient-bronze-horses-of-the-basilica-image457892220.html
