Eric Liddell (1902-1945), British champion runner and record holder, in April 1924 upon the announcement that he would not run in the 100 metre Olympic event because the trial heats were scheduled for a Sunday (July 6) and he would not indulge in work or play on the Sabbath. Liddell did win Gold that year in the 400 metre race in the 1924 Paris Summer Olympics on July 11. The following year, Liddell, a devout Christian, went to China as a missionary. Aside from two furloughs in Scotland, he remained in China until his death in a Japanese civilian internment camp in 1945. Eric Liddell, the Scottish Missionary who won the Gold in the 400 metres at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. His story was made famous by the film, 'Chariots of Fire'. After quitting athletics he became a christian missionary in China, until captured by the Japanese. He died in a POW Camp in 1945.
