An old engraving of John Howard (1726¬–1790). A philanthropist and social reformer, Howard was dedicated to prison reform and public health improvements. In 1773 he was appointed high sheriff of Bedfordshire and was shocked by the prison conditions he found. The system meant that poorer prisoners lived in terrible conditions. Howard's actions led to two 1774 parliamentary acts, abolishing jailers' fees and improving prisoner health. In 1866, the Howard League for Penal Reform was founded in his honour. A sketch of Michael Davitt (1846-1906), an Irish republican activist for Home Rule and land reform. He began as an organiser of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, which resisted British rule in Ireland with violence. Convicted of treason for arms trafficking in 1870, he served seven years in prison. Upon release, He pioneered a strategy of cooperation between the physical force and constitutional wings of Irish nationalism on the issue of land reform. With Charles Stewart Parnell, he co-founded the Irish National Land League in 1879, where he enjoyed the peak of his influence. An old engraving of the Peterloo Massacre, Manchester, Lancashire, England, UK in 1819. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. The Peterloo Massacre took place at St Peter's Field, Manchester, on Monday 16 August. It was the largest ever political gathering of working-class people. Eighteen people died and 400–700 were injured when cavalry charged into a crowd of around 60,000 people who had gathered to demand the reform of parliamentary representation. The Manchester Patriotic Union organised the mass rally, addressed by Henry Hunt. The 15th Hussars were ordered to disperse the crowd. He was a member of Parliament and a leader of the opposition to King Charles I, advocating for greater parliamentary authority and religious reform. He played a key role in the impeachment of the king's chief minister, the Duke of Buckingham, and later in the passage of the Grand Remonstrance, which outlined Parliament's grievances against the king.
