He was initially an Austrian soldier, but when faced with the charges of embezzlement fled to Ottoman Bosnia and converted to Islam, joined the Ottoman army where he quickly climbed in ranks. He was a commander in the Crimean War, where he won outstanding victories at Silistra and Eupatoria and participated in the siege of Sevastopol. On 23 May 1480 an Ottoman fleet of 160 ships appeared before Rhodes, at the gulf of Trianda, along with an army of 70,000 men under the command of Gedik Ahmed Pasha or Mesih Pasha. On 23 May 1480 an Ottoman fleet of 160 ships appeared before Rhodes, at the gulf of Trianda, along with an army of 70,000 men under the command of Gedik Ahmed Pasha or Mesih Pasha. The Knights Hospitaller garrison was led by Grand Master Pierre d'Aubusson. The Knights were reinforced from France by 500 knights and 2,000 soldiers under d'Aubusson's brother Antoine.

Kara Mustafa Pasha was an Ottoman military commander and Grand Vizier who served during the reign of Sultan Mehmed IV. He is best known for his leadership during the unsuccessful Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683, which marked the turning point in the Ottoman Empire's expansion into Europe. Despite having a large army, Kara Mustafa was unable to breach the walls of Vienna and was ultimately defeated by a combined force of Austrian, German, and Polish troops led by King Jan III Sobieski. As a result of his failure, Kara Mustafa was executed by the sultan and blamed for the defeat.
