Shiite Muslim mourners take part in a Muharram procession in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on September 20, 2018. Hundreds of Shiite Muslims took to the streets to commemorate the death of the third Imam, Hussein, slain along with 72 of his comrades in a battle against the army of the seventh-century caliph Yazid. In keeping with the military nature of these Ashura processions, mourners simulate self-flagellation and pound on their chests to the thump of a bass drum and the crackle of a snare.
