Major General James Wolfe (1727 – 1759) was a British Army Officer, known for his training reforms but remembered chiefly for his victory over the French at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, aka the battle of Quebec in Canada in September 1759, during which he died. It was a pivotal battle in the Seven Years' War which was fought by the British Army and Navy against the French Army on a plateau just outside the walls of Quebec City, on land that was originally owned by a farmer named Abraham Martin, hence the name of the battle. A late 19th Century illustration of the death of Major-General James Wolfe (1727-1759), a British Army officer remembered chiefly for his victory in 1759 over the French at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in Quebec. Wolfe led 4,400 men in an amphibious landing at the base of the cliffs west of Quebec along the St. Lawrence River. His army scaled the 200-metre cliff from the river and surprised the French under the command of the Marquis de Montcalm, who thought the cliff would be unclimbable and were defeated after fifteen minutes of battle, during which Wolfe was shot and died.
