Manchester United right-back Bill Foulkes, who survived the Munich plane disaster and was appointed the team's captain in succession to Roger Byrne, who died in the plane crash. Foulkes, 26, of St Helens, had worked in the pits until joining United.He played his first League game in 1952 and was capped for England two years later.
