The early 1900s caption reads: 'Portrait of Lady and Child by Reynolds (1723-1792) in the National Gallery. This portrait was purchased in 1871 with the Peel collection and is said to represent the Hon Mrs Musters and her son. The composition does not show Sir Joshua at his best, and the painting is perhaps rather thin.
