The tomb of Publius Cornelius Scipio, Roman general and later consul who is often regarded as one of the greatest military commanders. He probably died in 183 BC aged about 53 under suspicious circumstances, and it is possible that he either died of the lingering effects of the fever contracted while on campaign in 190 BC, or that he took his own life for causes unknown. He is said to have demanded that his body be buried away from his ungrateful city, and the Emperor Augustus is said to have visited his tomb in Liternum, southern central Italy, more than 150 years later. Publius Horatius Cocles was an officer in the army of the early Roman Republic who famously defended the Pons Sublicius, from the invading army of Etruscan King Lars Porsena of Clusium in the late 6th century BC, during the war between Rome and Clusium. By defending the narrow end of the bridge, the earliest known bridge of ancient Rome, spanning the Tiber River, he—along with two others—was able to hold off the attacking army long enough to allow other Romans to destroy the bridge behind him, blocking the Etruscans' advance and saving the city. Publius Ovidius Naso (43 BC – 18 AD), known as Ovid, was a Roman poet who lived during the reign of Augustus. He was a contemporary of Virgil and Horace, with whom he is ranked as one of the three canonical poets of Latin literature. He enjoyed enormous popularity, but, in one of the mysteries of literary history, was sent by Augustus into exile in a remote province on the Black Sea, where he remained until his death. Ovid himself attributes his exile to carmen et error, 'a poem and a mistake', but his discretion in discussing the causes has resulted in much speculation among scholars.
