This machine, ‘Washington One’, was used by the fire brigade in Brooklyn, New York, USA in the latter part of the 1800s. Steam pumper fire engines were used from the 1840s into the early part of the 20th century to pump water to the fire hoses put out fires. Large urban fire departments would invest in fire brigades, or engine companies, to tackle fires. The steam engine would be a horse driven. The vertical fast firing boilers, while heavy, were effective pieces of apparatus. An old engraving of syringe engine used in fighting fires in the 16th century. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. This mobile device was filled with water – here with a scoop from a barrel. It fired the water through a nozzle – the jet would not be at any great pressure. A squirt or fire syringe is a firefighting pump – hand squirts and hand pumps were in use as early as the 2nd century BC. The fire pump was reinvented in Europe in the 1500s and 1600s. A syringe is a simple reciprocating pump consisting of a plunger or piston that fits tightly within a cylindrical tube or barrel.
