Robert Emmet (1778-1803) was an Irish Republican, orator and rebel leader. Following the suppression of the United Irish uprising in 1798, he sought to organise a renewed attempt to overthrow the British Crown and Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland. With hopes of French assistance and radical militants in Great Britain, many of the surviving veterans of '98 hesitated to lend their support, and his 1803 rising in Dublin proved abortive. He was captured in August, convicted of treason and executed on the 20 September in Thomas Street in front of St. Catherine's Church, Dublin City.
