The Majority of the residents are immigrants from Sub-Saharan African countries and have travelled north through Libya and made treaceorous mediterranean sea crossings on small boats and rescued by the Maltese coast guard and Naval forces. Previous to living in the open centres around Malta the immigrants are detained in the Hal Far detention centre for up to 18 months while their refugee status is assesed and they are given asylum or returned to their country.
