Rest camps for men of the fleet, air and land forces, established by the Navy in Leaves Areas in the Southwest Pacific, offer a haven for ten days to two weeks rehabilitation. Similar to better 'Stateside' resorts - dances, beer, horseback riding, sulky driving, golf, tennis and swimming are just around the corner form the single private rooms, provided free of charge to each guest. The comment most often heard from the men 'checking out' is, ' If I felt just like a civilian again'. A little bit of Australia is wrapped up in this ride to the Golf Club in a sulkey. C. W. Nearly 15 years after the end of the Second World War over 170 refugee camps still exist in Austria for displaced persons from the conflict. According to UN there are 45 official camps however the Daily Herald uncovered as part of its Refugee Christmas Appeal a further 135 unofficial camps. Conditions in these camps are poor, most have no mains electricity, no fuel, no baths and often no running water. Jews in Hungary were fairly safe until Hitler, fearing that Hungary was seeking a deal with the allies, ordered the invasion of the country in March 1944. Between 15 May and 9 July 1944, over 434,000 Jews were deported on 147 trains, most of them to Auschwitz, where about 80 percent were gassed on arrival.
