'Venus and Anchises', c1889-1890, (c1930). Illustration to the "Epipsychidion", a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley, depicting the illicit meeting of Venus, goddess of love, and her earthly lover, the shepherd Anchises. The penalty for mortals for looking at a god or goddess was to be turned to stone. As Venus walks, accompanied by lions and a flight of doves, she turns autumn leaves into spring flowers and apple blossom, and night becomes day. Painting in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. The subject of this intense image was named for William Blake, a poet-painter revered by his artist-father George Richmond. With Samuel Palmer as a godfather, and drawing lessons from John Ruskin before he entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1858, the youth's career path must have seemed preordained.
