An old engraving of men working a vertical chain-pump made up of ceramic pots. They are pushing a horizontal treadmill to power a shaft with a cog system to raise water from a river for irrigation purposes in a chain of pots. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Chain pumps were used for centuries in the Middle East, in Europe from Greek and Roman Empire times, and in ancient China. A treadwheel or treadmill is a form of engine typically powered by humans. Treadwheels or treadmills could also be vertical, like a water wheel. Milton Regis, Kent, UK. 22nd March 2021. Swale Council have announced in partnership with Sittingbourne Society & East Kent Engineering Partnership to enhance the site of an ancient watermill situated within the residential area of Periwinkle Close, Milton Regis. Swale have purchased the area surrounding the mill wheel which dates back to Roman times. Archaeological investigations in the 1960’s found Roman Samian pottery shards on the site, suggesting it’s use as a mill spanned two millennia. Saepinum. The tannery dates back to the 1st century AD. A dolium and six brick containers embedded in the ground were used for rinsing. Vegetable substances transformed the skin into leather. From the 3rd century AD, a hydraulic mill (idromula) was installed to grind the vegetable essences. A wheel housed in a narrow rectangular pit operated by a jet of water, the pressure of which was regulated by a system of stone weirs. The small size of the containers suggests that sheepskins were tanned. The Saepinum tannery probably worked until the 4th-5th century AD.
