King John's seal to the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta Libertatum (Medieval Latin for 'the Great Charter of the Liberties'), aka Magna Charta; and the Great Charter was agreed to by King John of England at Runnymede, near Windsor, on 15 June 1215. It was drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury to make peace between the unpopular King and a group of rebel barons. Following a second coronation to affirm the authority of the King, Henry promised to restore the powers of the Crown and the barons agreed to give back the royal castles and pay their debts to the Crown. It was in a proclamation of February 1218 that the name ‘Magna Carta’ itself first appeared, in order to distinguish the Great Charter from its shorter forest brother. On 11 February 1225, at the same time as issuing the final and definitive version of Magna Carta, Henry likewise issued a new version of the Charter of the Forest.
