The Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC or Irish Constabulary) was the police force in Ireland from 1822 until 1922, when all of the island was part of the United Kingdom. It was a quasi-military police force and were routinely armed (including with carbines) and billeted in barracks. It policed Ireland during a period of unrest and Irish nationalist freedom fighting. An old engraving of Charles Cunningham Boycott’s crops being harvested under armed guard, Lough Mask area of County Mayo, Ireland in 1880. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. In the autumn of 1880, Boycott (1832–1897) was called upon by the Land League to reduce rents after a bad harvest. He refused. Orangemen travelled to harvest the crops, while a regiment of the 19th Royal Hussars and more than 1,000 men of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) were deployed to protect the harvesters. The episode was estimated to have cost at least £10,000 to harvest about £500 worth of crops.
