An old engraving of a man riding a ‘monocycle’ bicycle in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The bike is powered by hand with belts/ropes on pulleys driving the smaller wheel. This wheel turn drives (using a cog or ratchet system) the main, big wheel, the circumference of which should mean this vehicle could travel at speed. However, steering was achieved by leaning the body into a turn or putting a foot on the ground, which would somewhat limit its usefulness and safety. Many types of bicycle were invented during the Victorian era.
