Japan: 'Samurai on Horseback'. Ink painting, c. 1878. Samurai is the term for the military nobility of pre-industrial Japan. By the end of the 12th century, samurai became almost entirely synonymous with bushi, and the word was closely associated with the middle and upper echelons of the warrior class. The samurai followed a set of rules that came to be known as Bushidō. While they numbered less than ten percent of Japan's population, samurai teachings can still be found today in both everyday life and in martial arts such as Kendō, meaning the way of the sword. Japan: A samurai on horseback features in this poster for the Kusunoki Masashige Festival, Kenkoku Kai, 1931. During late 1920s and 1930s Japan, a new poster style developed that reflected the growing influence of the masses in Japanese society. These art posters were strongly influenced by the emerging political forces of Communism and Fascism in Europe and the Soviet Union, adopting a style that incorporated bold slogans with artistic themes ranging from Leftist socialist realism through Stateism and state-directed public welfare, to Militarism and Imperialist expansionism. [ 1870s Japan - Mt. Atago, Tokyo ] — The sacred torii gate of Atago Shrine at Mt. Atago in Tokyo in the 1870s. A rickshaw can be seen on the right of the torii. The steps behind the torii are the Otoko-zaka (Man Slope). The samurai Magaki Heikuro is said to have ascended and descended these stairs on horseback in 1634. The stairs on the right are the Onna-zaka (Woman Slope). Mt. Atago is only 26 meters above sea-level, but it offered a famous panoramic view of Tokyo and was a favorite spot for watching the New Year's sunrise, as well as moon and snow viewing. 19th century vintage albumen Stock Photohttps://www.alamy.com/image-license-details/?v=1https://www.alamy.com/1870s-japan-mt-atago-tokyo-the-sacred-torii-gate-of-atago-shrine-at-mt-atago-in-tokyo-in-the-1870s-a-rickshaw-can-be-seen-on-the-right-of-the-torii-the-steps-behind-the-torii-are-the-otoko-zaka-man-slope-the-samurai-magaki-heikuro-is-said-to-have-ascended-and-descended-these-stairs-on-horseback-in-1634-the-stairs-on-the-right-are-the-onna-zaka-woman-slope-mt-atago-is-only-26-meters-above-sea-level-but-it-offered-a-famous-panoramic-view-of-tokyo-and-was-a-favorite-spot-for-watching-the-new-years-sunrise-as-well-as-moon-and-snow-viewing-19th-century-vintage-albumen-image361674978.html
