In 1533 Henry broke with Pope Paul III to annul the long-standing marriage to his wife, Catherine of Aragon, and remarry. Catherine was the aunt of Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, and Charles took the annulment as a personal insult which resulted in France and the Empire declaring an alliance against Henry in 1538. So Sandown Castle, Kent, England, was built between 1539/40 to protect the Downs in east Kent. It had three tiers of artillery with the embrasures in the walls widely splayed to provide the maximum possible space for the guns to operate. File photo dated 23/3/1962 of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a warm leopard-skin coat on a very cold March day at the Sandown Park race meeting, accompanied by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Elizabeth II was famed for her love of block colours and matching hats and her fashion became a legendary part of her role as monarch. The Queen was once described as 'power dressing in extremis' for using vibrant shades to make herself stand out from the crowd while her hats allowed her to be easily spotted but were small enough so her face was visible.
