This illustration dates to around 1898 and shows the Hindu deity Vishnu. Vishnu was honored as the second god of the Trimurti, or the Hindu trinity. He was the preserver god. Shesha, the king of the nagas (primal beings of creation), is usually shown as a huge form that floats coiled in space or on the great ocean. There Shesha forms the bed on which Vishnu lies. In Hindu tradition Shesha, also known as Sheshanaga, is the king of all Nagas, and of all serpent deities, one of the primal beings of creation, and according to the Bhagavata Purana, an avatar of the Supreme God known as Narayana. Called the Sleeping Vishnu, or Jalakshayan Narayan, the statue depicts the deity reclining on the twisting coils of the cosmic serpent Shesha. An open-air temple containing the statue of sleeping Vishnu floating in a small pond resembling the cosmic ocean surrounded by twisting coils of Snake.
