Vintage Photography from 1975 of the King Orry IV in Glasson Dock, Lancashire, England. Built for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company in 1946, she made her final crossing from Douglas in August 1975. Whilst laid-up awaiting breakup, the ship broke away from her berth during a severe storm and drifted aground in the Lune Estuary, coming to rest on the mud flats. Image from the photo album of Oberleutnant Oscar Müller of Kampfgeschwader 1: Taken through the nose glazing of a Junkers Ju 88 of 5./KG 1 in 1941, this image is captioned, 'attack on the French cargo ship Flandre 4870 tonnes'. SS Flandre was seized by the Germans when France fell but she activated a German magnetic mine on 13th September 1940 when leaving Bordeaux and grounded in the mouth of the Gironde river. She broke in two the following day and was abandoned, without casualties. It is thought she may have been used for target practice by the Luftwaffe thereafter.
