An old engraving showing a Victorian straw boiler. It is from a mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. In the 1870s California manufacturers began to experiment with straw as a fuel source for steam engines. Steam engines that were powered by coal or wood could be costly and cumbersome, especially in rural areas. By using cheap waste straw, the by-product of threshing, costs could be kept down. Some smaller straw boilers were on wheels and thus portable. Steam could be generated easily enough in straw-burning engines, but steam level/power was not generally that high. Steam engines that were powered by coal or wood could be costly and cumbersome, especially in rural areas. By using cheap waste straw, the by-product of threshing, costs could be kept down. Some smaller straw boilers were on wheels and thus portable. Steam could be generated easily enough in straw-burning engines, but steam level/power was not generally that high.

A Cornish engine is a type of steam engine developed in Cornwall, England, UK. It is a beam engine that uses steam at a higher pressure than the earlier atmospheric beam engines designed by Thomas Newcomen and then James Watt.
