Standing cup. Culture: Italian, Venice (Murano). Dimensions: Height: 11 5/8 in. (29.5 cm). Date: ca. 1530. The body of blown glass was manipulated to an ogee profile with a separately blown pedestal, everted at the foot with the edge turned up and over. The vertical ribs on the bowl and pedestal were formed of tailed-on spines, which, upon reheating, fused and subsided, merging with the level of the supporting glass. Here in the very form of the object we see the combination of a late Gothic shape with vertical gadroons that evoke a common feature of glass bowls of the Roman era. This crater, first imaged during MESSENGER's third Mercury flyby, has drawn scientific attention because of the large, arc-shaped pit located on the eastern side of its floor. Similar pits have been discovered on the floors of several other Mercury craters, such as Beckett and Gibran. These pits are postulated to have formed when subsurface magma subsided or drained, causing the surface to collapse into the resulting void. If this interpretation is correct, pit-floor craters such as Picasso provide evidence of shallow magmatic activity in Mercury's history. Forest of lava trees resulting from eruption of a 1-km-line of vents east of Pu'u Kahaulea on Hawai'i Island's Kilauea Volcano. The bulbous top of each lava tree marks the high stand of the lava flow as it spread through the trees. As the fissure eruption waned, the flow continued to spread laterally; its surface subsided, leaving pillars of lava that had chilled against tree trunks. Meeting of the British Association at Birmingham: the secretary of the Valley Field Club reading a paper on the geology of the district, 1865. 'Hunger and thirst level all distinctions. The blending of science and sociability was very pleasing; and sandwiches and savans, and British Associates and bitter beer, were a most suggestive alliteration. When the rattle of knives and forks and the popping of corks had subsided, Mr. Cooper, of the Severn Valley Field Club, read a paper explanatory of the carboniferous limestone of the district'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865. The name Kinderdijk is Dutch for 'Children dike'. During the Saint Elizabeth flood of 1421, the Grote Hollandse Waard flooded, but the Alblasserwaard polder stayed unflooded. It is said that when the terrible storm had subsided, someone went to the dike between these two areas to see what could be saved. In the distance he saw a wooden cradle floating on the water. As it came nearer, some movement was detected. A cat was seen in the cradle trying to keep it in balance by jumping back and forth so that no water could get into it.
