An unhewn stone marking the death of Rowland Taylor (1510-1555), Rector in the market town, Hadleigh in Suffolk. He was arrested six days after the Queen Mary I, ascended the throne and charged with heresy for having preached a sermon denouncing the Roman Catholic practice of clerical celibacy. These issues came to a head when Queen Mary I began a program to re-establish Catholicism in England. On 26 March 1554, the Privy Council ordered the arrest of Taylor and he was sentenced to death.
