Edison's Phonograph. In 1877 Thomas Edison filed a patent on a machine that could record and play back sound. He demonstrated this simple device by reciting the poem Mary had a little lamb. His voice caused the membrane in the microphone to vibrate. A stylus attached to the membrane drew grooves of varying depth in a sheet of tinfoil wrapped around a rotating cylinder which moved along the microphone with the stylus. An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of Thomas Alva Edison (1847–1931) and an illustration of his phonograph. Edison was an American inventor and businessman who has been described as America's 'greatest inventor'. He developed many devices in fields. The invention that first gained him notice was the phonograph in 1877. This was so unexpected by the public as to seem almost magical. His first phonograph recorded on tinfoil on a grooved cylinder. Despite its poor sound quality and recordings that could be played only a few times, the device made Edison a celebrity.
