Edison's phonograph was developed as a result of Thomas Edison's work on two other inventions, the telegraph and the telephone. In 1877, Edison was working on a machine that would transcribe telegraphic messages through indentations on paper tape, which could later be sent over the telegraph repeatedly. This development led Edison to speculate that a telephone message could also be recorded in a similar fashion. He experimented with a diaphragm which had an embossing point and was held against rapidly-moving paraffin paper. The speaking vibrations made indentations in the paper. The atmospheric engine invented by Thomas Newcomen in 1712, often referred to simply as a Newcomen engine, was the first practical device to harness the power of steam to produce mechanical work. Newcomen engines were used throughout Britain and Europe, principally to pump water out of mines, starting in the early 18th century. James Watt's later Watt steam engine was an improved version of the Newcomen engine. As a result, Watt is today better known than Newcomen in relation to the origin of the steam engine. Knole House and Park, is located immediately to the south-east of Sevenoaks in west Kent. It dates back to the mid-15th century, with major additions in the 16th and early 17th centuries. Thomas Sackville, or Lord Buckhurst, had had a distinguished career at court under Elizabeth and then been appointed Lord High Treasurer to James VI and I. Sackvill had the resources to undertake renovations to the state rooms at Knole, hoping to receive a visit by the King, but this does not seem to have occurred and the lord treasurer himself died during the building work, in April 1608. Hampton Court Palace in the borough of Richmond upon Thames, built in 1515 for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, a favourite of King Henry VIII until he fell from favour. The cardinal gave the palace to the King who later enlarged it. In the 17th century, King William III's massive rebuilding and expansion work, intended to rival Versailles, destroyed much of the Tudor palace. Work ceased in 1694, leaving the palace in two distinct contrasting architectural styles, domestic Tudor and Baroque, yet unity exists due to the use of pink bricks and a symmetrical, if vague, balancing of successive low wings.
