Cosmetic Dish in the Shape of a Bolti Fish ca. 1479–1425 B.C. New Kingdom The bolti fish, or tilapia, common in the Nile valley since ancient times, is easily recognized by its long dorsal fin. While carved in the round, this object is actually a fish-shaped dish, with a depression in one side that would have been used for the preparation of cosmetics. scarab, cartouche, Mencheperre, Amon, uraeus, The seal has the shape of a stylized scarab with a cartouche on its back with presumably the name of Thutmose III: Men-cheper-re. The rest of the back shows no further detail, just like the head with clypeus. The beetle is separated from the sealing surface by a horizontal groove in both sides. In the oval seal plane, the goddess name Amon-Re seems to have been carved between a uraeus hose left and right that may replace the missing reed leaf for the sound value i as is customary in cryptography.
