A steam train crossing the former Victorian Railway Viaduct over the Vale of Dale House, Staithes, Whitby, North Yorkshire UK (Designer John Dickson). It was built from iron & concrete to carry the Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway over the valley in 1875 but didn’t open until 1883. Because of the Tay Bridge disaster in 1879, the extra strengthening lateral braces seen in the picture were added later. The first crossing of the original Tay Rail Bridge 1st June 1878. The bridge was to stand for less than two years. On the night of 28 December 1879 at 7.15 pm the bridge collapsed after its central spans gave way during a winter gale. A train with six carriages carrying seventy-five passengers and crew crossing at the time of the collapse plunged into the river Tay. All seventy-five were lost. The inquiry following the collapse revealed that the bridge did not allow for wind loading during high winds. A late 19th century view of the Tay Bridge that carries the railway across the Firth of Tay in Scotland between Dundee and the suburb of Wormit in Fife. Its span is 2.75 miles (4.43 kilometres). Plans for a bridge over the Tay to replace the train ferry service emerged in 1854, but the first Tay Bridge did not open until 1878. The bridge suddenly collapsed in high winds the following year. It was replaced by the second bridge (pictured) constructed of iron and steel with a double-track parallel to the remains of the first bridge. Work commenced in 1883 and the bridge was opened in 1887.
