British Victorian games and pastimes - Playing shuttlecock or Battledore in the 1830's. It was sometimes referred to as Jeu de Volant, an attempt by the upper classes to distance themselves from similar games played by their working class counterparts. The early sport related to that of modern badminton. The bats were the BATtledores and the object of the game was to pass the shuttlecock backwards & forwards between players without it falling to the ground. The game has a long history with the shuttlecocks taking many lightweight forms,e.g.cork & feathers, sweet corn cobs and corn leaves. Newhaven Fishwives, Jeanie Wilson and Annie Linton, 1845. Hill and Adamson’s four-year collaboration yielded around 3,000 photographs, including portraits of members of the middle and upper classes and, in what may be the first social documentary project, of the working class. Included in their survey of contemporary life were numerous portraits of the fishermen’s wives in the villages around Edinburgh. The women, garbed in distinctive striped skirts and aprons, cleaned their husbands’ catch, then carried it in wicker baskets to the city where they offered it for sale. An old engraving of the men on horseback out ‘hawking’ (falconry), England, UK in medieval times. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. Here the falconer (left) carries a hooded falcon on a wooden frame. The sport of hawking, gamehawking or falconry, was one of their favourite forms of hunting for the upper classes, nobility and royalty in the Middle Ages. Falconry is the hunting of wild animals in their natural state and habitat by means of a trained bird of prey. Small animals such as squirrels and rabbits often fall prey to these birds. Advert for an Agamatic domestic boiler, 1951. The advert shows a 'posh' couple and uses the archaic term 'beastly' to describe other boilers of the day. It asserts the continuous availibility of hot water. It also notes that their coke-fired boiler will happily consume kitchen waste. The Aga Company was Swedish - the AGA company was Aktiebolaget Svenska Gasaccumulator. In 1957 all production re-located to the UK. Its popularity in parts of British society led to the term 'AGA Saga' for literary works that concerned the upper middle classes in the 1990s. An old engraving of typical clothing worn c. 1800 in Georgian Britain. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. Here people of the upper and middle classes are gathered for a music recital. At this time there was great interest at this time in ancient Greece and Rome, ladies wore ‘full’ dresses, the style based on the drapery of classical statues. The waist was high and uncorseted, and the materials light in colour and texture. Muslin had become a fashionable fabric. Men often wore dark, well-cut and fitted clothes – often a cut-away cloth coat with brass buttons.
