Joseph Lancaster's British and Foreign School Society (BFSS) offered charitable aid to educational projects in the UK and around the world by funding schools, other charities and educational bodies. Built in Borough Road, Southwark, London and established in 1798, it was an important development in the provision of universal free education for children. The Lancasterian system used older children who had already been given some education to teach the younger children. A group photograph of pupils and two teachers at Mileham Elementary (Primary) School, Breckland, Norfolk, England, UK c. 1908. The boys and girls wear an interesting mix of clothing. Some are very smartly dressed – as are their teachers. Some of the boys seem dressed for sporting activity. They are posed with a banner with the school shield on it. It also indicates winners of their school competition (‘challenge trophy’) – it seems that Scarning class often won the award!
