An old engraving from the 1800s of a steam-powered fog-warning siren for alerting shipping. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The first steam-powered fog siren was installed at the lighthouse on Sandy Hook, New Jersey, USA in 1867. Until the siren was installed ships were warned off the rocks in foggy conditions by repeated cannon fire. At the heart of most sirens was a rotating cylinder alternately opening and closing a passageway to either steam or compressed air. The rotation produced the desired frequency in the long horn, which amplified the sound. An old engraving of a crew member tending to the sick on board an emigrant ship in the mid-1800s. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. These vessels were often called ‘coffin ships’ and carried Irish migrants escaping the Great Irish Famine and Scottish Highlanders displaced by the Highland Clearances. The ships carrying emigrants were overcrowded and disease-ridden, with poor access to food and water, resulting in the deaths of many people as they crossed the Atlantic, with death rates commonly reaching 30%.
