1950s, historical picture from this era showing the Wilberforce Monument in Hull city centre, Queen Victoria Dock Square. Erected in 1835 in the style of Nelson's column in London, the column was 90 feet, and the statue on top 12 feet tall, carved out of hard-wearing millstone grit. The impressive memorial to William Wilberforce [1759-1833] who was a British politician and philanthropist, was because of his work as the leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade and it is this for which is he is rightly recognised.
