Wreck of the Idun, Southwold, 17 January 1912, by Reg Carter (1886-1949), freelance commercial artist based in Southwold, Suffolk, where he had his studio in the High Street. The Idun was a three-masted Norwegian barque which was blown onto the sandbanks. The bright light in the sky is a line being fired by the coastguard's rocket crew, to try to haul the ship to shore. Sadly the ship could not be saved, but the crew were rescued. Dhoon Bay aka Goat Well Bay , near Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland , showing the wreck of the Monreith from nearby Wigtown, which had been built in Port William in 1880. On 12th November 1900 she was on a voyage from Newcastle, (Ireland) to Silloth carrying granite kerb stones. During a storm she attempted to take shelter in the mouth of Kirkcudbright Bay but foundered.
