Royal Brigantine. Built in 1778 by order of Queen Maria I of Portugal (1734-1816), by the Royal Naval Shipyard (Real Arsenal da Marinha) in Lisbon, for the betrothal of Prince John (Joao), the future King John VI (Joao VI). After that it passed to the official service of the Royal Household. The construction and design was the work of Torquato José Clavina, foreman ship's carpenter at the Naval Arsenal. The gilded wood was crafted by the artist Manuel Vieira.
